This concert will celebrate the launch of Solidaridad’s debut album: DISTANCIA, produced by Juno award winning Michael Wojewoda. They will be joined by a special guest pianist on tour from Argentina, Ariel Pirotti. Bring your dancing shoes to enjoy a post-concert milonga.
Written and recorded during the pandemic, DISTANCIA takes you on a journey through despair to the hope that kept us going through our darkest days. Featuring original music and lyrics by Aparna Halpé (Canada), and works by Julián Peralta, Pétalo Selser, and Eva Wolff (Argentina), this album redefines the face and sound of contemporary tango in Canada. DISTANCIA is funded by the Ontario Arts Council. Out on Bandcamp on May 28th, 2023.
Solidaridad was founded in 2021 by Aparna Halpé, to create fair work, professional development, and performance opportunities for women tango musicians. While trained in historical tango performance practice focusing on Golden Age styles, Solidaridad is proud to present new music by women tango composers and arrangers from around the world. Following sold out performances in Toronto, Solidaridad performed to packed halls at the Reed Tango for Musicians festival in Portland Oregon, and headlined La Nuestra Tango Festival in NYC in 2022. Solidaridad is Aparna Halpé, Suhashini Arulanandam, Esme Allen-Creighton, Sybil Shanahan, Shannon Wojewoda, Elizabeth Acker, and Valeria Matzner. This show is the second of five in the "Hugh's Room Live Presents: Latin & Global Music Series", which is curated by Laura Fernandez and made possible with the support of Ontario Creates.

Last year, when the brutal killing of Mahsa Amini shocked the world, Solidaridad Tango decided that we would gather a group of incredible women artists to hold a fundraising concert for women in Iran. All funds will go towards the Center for Human Rights in Iran who are working on the ground to bring supplies to women in prisons, and actively engaged in helping refugees find sanctuary, often as they flee with nothing but the shirts on their backs. Your support will directly touch the lives of people who need it the most.
